Anal Glands

For those that don't know anal glands are scent glands on each side of the anus. Most dogs express these scent glands when they poop, however some dogs have trouble with this and need them expressed.

Depending on who you talk to and what they were taught, you might hear that their grooming routine is to always express anal glands in the bath (unless specified not to), always express little dogs as they are the ones that tend have trouble, or only if asked to.

Most recently I have learned that expressing anal glands for a dog that can do it themselves can actually cause more problems, therefore my policy is to ask you if you would like them done or not.

If you don't have the glands expressed, one way to tell if they do need them done is if they are scooting their butts on the floor. If they are doing this they are trying to express them, if they are doing this regularly I would suggest having them done because either they are having trouble doing it themselves or they are just flat out expressing them on your floors!
