How Often Should My Pet Be Groomed?

You can probably find a list online of how often each breed should be groomed, and of course you will find that shorter haired dogs won't need groomed as often as long haired dogs. I just don't feel these lists are the most reliable as there is so much to consider.

With short haired dogs I say it really just depends on how soon you feel your dog is getting stinky or you want them to have a good brush out to cut down on the shedding. If it takes 3 months for them to get stinky or hair to be a problem then there you go, if you want them cleaned up weekly or every two weeks that is fine too. The main thing with going longer between grooming is being sure the nails are not getting too long.

Dogs with longer coats such as golden retrievers are going to be a similar guideline as the short haired dogs, however you will also need to take into consideration if their coat is starting to get matts.

Long haired dogs will depend on if you keep them long or cut short and how much you brush at home. A lot of times after about 4 weeks the hair needs re-trimmed at the eyes, pads/feet and sani area if nothing else. If you get a haircut and 4 weeks later you are still happy with the length we can do a brush and bath which will include tidying up a bit or just some tidying up, if you feel that is needed. If you keep a long coat 2-4 weeks (depending on how long you keep it) to make sure the coat keeps from getting matted.

4-6 weeks is a good average rule of thumb for how often your pet should be groomed as it is also a good time frame for between nail trims.  I have however known people with their pets in a full length coat to get their pet groomed weekly or every two weeks because they want the extra help maintaining the brushing on the coat, also waiting the 4-6 weeks and brushing regularly at home or paying more for de-matting (if the hair matts) or having matts shaved out.

You can always get just nail trims between baths as well if needed. How often nails need trimmed is also going to vary, some dogs keep their nails short just from going on walks, some grow reallly fast and some grow really slow. Some dogs with really long nails still have short quicks and we can easily trim them to a reasonable length so its fine, other dogs their quicks get very long too and we can't cut the nails to a good length since cutting the quick will hurt them and bleed. A good rule here is that if your dog is standing and the nails are touching the ground they are too long. The nails need to be kept off the ground so they don't put any pressure on the toes and cause them to spread. Also make sure they don't curl and grow into the pad.
